Life’s merry-go-round

Me on a merry-go-round years ago

The other night my friend expressed a feeling of being stuck on a merry-go-round

Passing the same landmarks
Feeling the same sensations
Riding the same circuit

Again and again

It’s true
Life can feel that way
Like nothing’s ever going to change
Even if you wish and hope and try to stop the repetition

Then
All of a sudden
Change comes

And all you want is the
Predictable landmarks
Comfortable sensations
Repetitive movements

But it’s all new and different

And a little bit scary

Then again

That landmark may be new
But it’s like one you passed a million times

That sensation may be strange
But it’s not unlike the once-familiar feelings now gone

The circuit may be different
But it’s a circuit all the same

New patterns emerge
New friends are made
New experiences to be had

All amounting to
New Life

…At least, I hope that’s how it will be
