Heavenly Princess

encouraging femininity

Beth March

Beth March is the third of the four March sisters from the book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott which takes place during the Civil War.

The dress is a simple style made up in 100% cotton calico, typical of young girls of the period.  The bodice closes in the back, and is slightly fitted with gathers.  The waistline is piped, and the very full skirt is attached with gauging (tiny “cartridge” pleats individually whip stitched to the piping).

Three hooks and eyes close up the back.  The bodice is lined with white cotton.  The sleeves are bias-cut and gathered into the armscye.

*Historical note* This is the most historically accurate of the four dresses in my Little Women collection.  I don’t believe there are any inaccuracies.
