O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

~listen to the video while you read~

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel

This the plea of God’s chosen nation:
Emmanuel, God-with-us
Come to us!

This mournful cry rose to the distant throne of God for centuries

O come, O come, great Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes on Sinai’s height
In ancient times once gave the law
In cloud and majesty and awe

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel

For ages Israel lived in hope
This Hope of Emmanuel was the undercurrent in all their law and prophets
All the scriptures point to God-with-us

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,
And give them victory over the grave

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel has come to thee, O Israel

Then the day came
Unexpectedly, even to those living in expectancy
Quietly, like an olive shoot sprouting from a seemingly dead stump

O come, Thou Root of Jesse’s tree
An ensign of Thy people be;
Before Thee rulers silent fall;
All peoples on Thy mercy call

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel has come to thee, O Israel

That shoot
That new life
Is not really new at all
For the new shoot is also the old root
The Author of creation is also the Finisher
The Son of God come to save His people and the world
Is also the perfect Holy One the world needed saving from

O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come again, O Israel

Once again His people, all of true Israel
Live in wondering expectancy
Knowing the scriptures promise Emmanuel’s return
Yet knowing our God is a God of the unexpected
And choosing to simply rest in the promise
That He will return and make all right

O come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind;
Bid thou our sad divisions cease,
And be Thyself our King of Peace

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come again, O Israel
