Leaven and Heaven

I recently tried to rejuvenate my sourdough starter. After a weekend full of reading up on natural yeasts, my ears perked up when our pastor read from Mark 8:

Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”

Like sin, leaven causes irreversible change. I could mix flour and water to make a dough that looks just like leavened sourdough, but time would reveal a clear difference.

Irreversible change.

Except that nothing is impossible with God.

Like leaven, the kingdom of heaven causes irreversible change. Hundreds, thousands “walk the aisle” and “pray the prayer”. Which of them are truly permeated by the message of the Kingdom?

Time will reveal a clear difference.

Which kind of leaven is affecting change in you?
