Simple Secrets is comprised of 50 short chapters, broken into 5 categories or “parts”: Beginning with the Basics, Developing Your Style, Achieving Balance, Living a Good Life, and Staying Connected. Each chapter has a five-word title, beginning with a verb. From “Honor Your Father and Mother” to “Allow Yourself to be Sad” to “Live an Attitude of Gratitude”, this book is full to the brim with practical, funny, and wise advice.
Luci Swindoll’s writing is easy to read, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t convicting! The secrets that she shares are simple, though sometimes difficult, to integrate into your own life. The stories she tells add spice to her advice and are all down to earth and realistic. I appreciated the fact that there was a good mixture of straight biblical truth (“Take Jesus with you Everywhere”, “Keep Your Word Every Time”, “Get Doctrine Under Your Belt”) as well as creative ideas (“Draw a Picture to Understand”, “Cook Something Special for Yourself”, “Invite People to Your Home”). You could argue, though, that all of her suggestions stem from biblical roots. Most of the Bible quotations are taken from the Message, which isn’t my favorite translation, but fits with her playful tone. Using this translation also put familiar scriptures in a new light for me.
I would recommend this book to women young and old and in all different vocations – Luci Swindoll has probably “been there, done that” at some point in her long happy life, and she has something to offer everyone!
