Evangelism can be discouraging business if you let it.
It can hurt when someone goes away sad after hearing your message. It’s even worse when people try to trap you and use your words out of context. There are many who don’t even really listen, they just want to tell you what they think.
But should we really let these things hinder us? After all, we are re-presenting Christ to the people of the world, and when He presented His message, He was met with all of these responses as well.
The ‘rich young ruler’ went away sad after hearing that all his good works could not save him. Over and over, the Pharisees tried to trap Jesus in His words, and just consider the people surrounding Him on the cross. They didn’t listen to His few words of merciful forgiveness, rather they just yelled at Him.
John 15 (ESV)
18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.
21 But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.
